Pre Production - Initial ideas for digipak.

Initial ideas for digipak -

My partner and I have been out taking pictures of leaves and things which we may want to include in our digipak or on our magazine advert. These are some images we have collected over this past week. The leaves all scattered in the picture to the right I believe would'nt look as well on the front cover because it is too plain and your eye would be distracted from the name of the band and album.
I like the colours in these images, the orangey brown is the sort of colour we would like to include on our digipak as it goes with the name of the band '50 Leaves' and also the name of the album 'The fall'. When it comes to choosing what image we would both like to put on the digipak I think we will both have to sit down as a partnership and work out which will work best to draw in our audience and sell our product.
The image of just the single leave alone I think could be a powerful image yet the back ground may have to be change. The image to the top left would have to be my favourite and fits in more with the colour scheme.
These images here with the scenery of the trees and the colour different I think will work well however which one we want to include is yet to be discussed between me and my partner. This picture of the leaves all together I believe would look really good on one of the folds of the digipak, yet me and my partner will discuss and decided which will look best and will attract our audience.
Myself and my partner then took more pictures in different locations, I think these pictures would look good when put together with the typography.

Pre Production - Initial ideas for digipak tracking list.

Initial ideas for digipak tracking list -

I have been researching into what sort of typography I am going to have on my tracking list on my digipak, myself and my partner both like this writing we have found on dafont and believe it will go very well with the images we have in mind for our digipak.

I made this image on paint by just copying the words from dafont and arranging them in the order I would like them to be on the digipak. The way the writing is not all in line is just an idea myself and my partner will test out more ways in which we can have the writing and then pick a finial one.

Pre Production - Conventions analysis of 3 digipacks.

Conventions analysis of 3 digipak's -

Pre Production - Initial ideas for digipak design.

Initial ideas for digipak design -
For our digipak my partner and I have decided we would like the theme to be based on nature. The idea of having leaves would connect with the name of the band and 'The fall'. These are some pictures I have looked at and are in the same direction as what me and my partner will be including on our digipak.

We also looked at what sort of typography we would like to include on our digipak. Myself and my partner both had an idea of which sort of writing we would like so we searched Dafont and found two types of writing.

Our first choice was this font but after looking on the website we found another one that although looks reasonably the same we liked much better.
Although our second choice looks very much the same as the first one the writing is more pushed together and myself and my partner both liked this, we also likes the way the 5 had a curve in it. Putting the picture and writing together we both believe this will create a really good look for the digipak.

Pre Production - Conventions analysis of 3 music videos.

From analysing these three videos myself and my partner have adapted our initial ideas and made some adjustments on things were going to include in the video.
Music video analysis 1 - Nickleback 'I'd come for you'.

Music video analysis 2 - Laura Marling 'Ghost'.

Music video analysis 3 - Kelly Rowland 'Stole'.

Pre Production - Reflection week 3

Reflection week 3 -

This week I analysed the results from my questionnaire that I created on survey monkey, which I gave to members of my target audience. I used charts and looked at all the answers they gave me. When I got to analysing the research I found some questions difficult to analyse yet some were more easier as the answers were similar I stated how every question made me rethink my initial ideas that I made in my initial pitch and how some things I thought would work well in the video wouldn't appeal to my audience. Me and my partner also finally picked which one of our songs we were going to use for our final video. We picked my song 50 leaves - Man on fire., the reasons for picking this song was that we thought we could have a wider range of concepts in the video, the video has different pace changes throughout and there is room for part of the video to be slower pace and then faster pace, we thought this would work well in drawing the audience in and would make the storyline more interesting.

Week to come -

In weeks to come me and my partner are going to think about what shots were going to include within the video, who is going to be our main character, and we are also going to look more into what our final video will be like overall, also were going to analyse digipak's, videos and magazine adverts in order to give us an idea of what ours are going to look like.

Pre Production - Charts and analysis of audience research result.

Charts and analysis of audience research results -

In my research I planned to find out what my audience wanted to see in a music video. After giving my pitch I knew that I needed some more information from my audience to gain a correct concept that they would enjoy. I created a questionnaire on www.surveymonkey.com, this questionnaire would be for me to give out to my audience and to gain some information on them about what they thought about my ideas. After gathering my feedback from the questionnaires I looked at what they said and analysed it to see how I could make my music video more appealing to them and what they want to see. I feel that this feedback has helped, yet I will do a focus group to help me gain some more research fro my target audience based on some of the answers from this questionnaire, for example as the answer for how to end my video was nearly 50/50 and it didn't help me decided how the video shall end this is a question Iwould like to include on a focus group.

Pre Production - Beach combing for my music video ideas.

   Beach Combing

This connotes well to the audience that the child in an argumentative home and this shot would explain the theme well.
This typical view of how bullying is shown within films and videos is what we'd like to show it but almost shy away from being stereotypical and cheesy.

This video is an idea of what we would like our final video to be like, yet we would like to include the theme of bulling as well.
Different forms of lighting will be used for different parts of the video, the beginning when its sad and the video is more serious low lighting will be used but as she goes into her own world the lighting will be more bright and vibrant.
A part of the video may or may not have animation dependant on the audience research and if our audience will be drawn into the video more and find it more interesting.

This is also a video which is similar to the theme of our music video yet compared to this we would like to include the theme of violence within a home.
As the main character might have a love interest towards the end of the video, and the ipod will be apart of where she listens to the song and forgets about the world and everything going on in her life.
These are some of the locations we will be filming in for the bullying section of the video it will be filmed at a school and then for the section where the girl is at home facing arguments it shall be filmed in a house.

This is the type of animation me and my partner are thinking of using in our music video.

Pre Production - Reflection week 2

Reflection - Week 2

This week I created a questionnaire, which I will be giving out to find out some information about what my audience actually want to see in a music video and what they would like to learn about an artist from their music video. I used survey monkey to do this. I found it a bit difficult to word the questions so it the person doing my questionnaire could understand what I wanted to ask them, although after a while of rewording the questions I found it easier. This week I have also tried gaining permission for my song 'Man on fire' by 50 leaves. I've sent an email although they have yet to return one back to me, after looking into it more I have seen that they have broken up and as the song is still on unsigned.com, I have decided to still use this song.

This week -
I plan to complete more of the tasks needed to be done before I start filming. As me and my partner have finally decided on choosing my song to do the video more. We are trying to get all the tasks completed as quickly as possible but also to the best of our ability so we have more time to focus on filming.

Pre Production - Permission for song

Permission -

To gain permission to use my song 'A voice within' i had to contact Chrisina Aguliera's record company RCA, yet i couldnt find if that was still her record company. I then searched www.unsigned.com to see if i could find a song which would still relate to the concept of my video. I picked 50Leaves - Man on fire, i thought this song went really well and after asking my class if they thought it went well with the concept and they agreed. I have emailed the group and i am awaiting their reply. Although as it is on unsigned.com and i believe that the group has broken up i am planning on still using the song.

Here is a print screen of the email that i sent them which i did not recieve a reply for.

Pre Production - Reflection, holiday and week one.

Reflection on the week -

During the holidays a task was given to find three copyright free songs and then come up with twenty-five words to explain what the narrative for each video would be. After this I needed to create a pitch for one of the songs on which I needed to include what I would have in my video, how I would represent it, what the target audience would be and information that is needed to make a video and define what your video is going to include. Once returning back to school it was time to give my initial ideas pitch to my class members, after this pitch was given we all sat down and feedback was given to me on how I could improve my work and what things they thought were strengths and weaknesses. After receiving the feedback from my peers I then wrote up an analysis on what the weaknesses and strengths were and what I could improve on.

Pre Produtcion - The initail ideas pitch feedback and analysis for 'A voice within'.

Pitch -

A pitch was created to give my class members about my initial ideas of how I would make a video for the song 'A voice within'. I wanted to gain feedback from them in order to help me improve my initial ideas and to see whether I was representing the artist and main theme of the video well and if I was going to achieve my target audience or not. I received feedback on what I could add to the video or which things I may get rid of in order to make my video more appealing.

Feedback video -

Some weaknesses that were brought up during the discussion for my initial ideas of the video for 'A voice within' were that the ending of the video shouldn't be a happy ending as it will not go with the tone of the song, yet the ending the group suggested I think would go rather well with the message and tone of the song, and that it would also work well as a cliff hanger, this ending would consist of someone knocking on the door of the toilet that the artist is performing in and ending with her standing up and either going to open the door or opening the door and hugging him/her. This would be much easier to film and also a lot less challenging for the audience to watch and work out what was happening throughout. Another thing that was seen as a weakness was that it was not clear when comparing it to the Nickleback video if it was going to involve a father figure helping her out of the situation she is in. I thought this through after I received the feedback and thought it would be best not to include a dad helping her as it would be very similar to the video for 'I'd come for you' and I wanted to be original.
Things that were seen as strengths were that the audience was well defined and that the concept would relate well to them as this is something my target audience might be going through. Also that the concept of my video was very original how it involved family issues and bullying all in one. Another strength is my idea of having the girl plug her iPod in and almost blocking out the world and then involving a bit of animation, this is still something I need to think through about what I am going to include in the animation yet I believe this will make the video that little bit stronger.
Some things I had to think though to make my pitch more defined and more ideas for my video and to improve my video were if I was going to film it in HD or not, in the feedback video I said that I was going to film and see what camera it would look better on, I have now decided that I am going to film on HD camera and only HD camera as I think this will look more defined and the quality is going to be a lot better. Another thing I had to think of is what location I shall be filming in, this made me think through where I can have most of my video shot, other that having the artist in the toilet my main filming places will be in the school for the bullying section of the video and then the rest in a home where the family problems will be happening to show how much this young girl is going through. On the topic of branding I think I'm going to use one main thing to help the artist stand out, so the DVD cover hasn't got to look dark and dull to match with the song, what I am going to have as the artist signature look is yet to be decided. From the feedback I also had to think of how the narrative is going to show that the child is not popular as is almost an outcast at school, short shots of her being along and people laughing and pointing at her is what I think will help show this perfectly, as if people are laughing and pointing at you it is going to connote they find you funny or dislike you. One last thing I had to think of was what sort of clothing is going to be worn in the video, dark colours will be worn by the girl throughout as I want to connote her mood to the audience, the bullies will be wearing brighter colours to show how their happy and enjoying school life and not going though the same emotions as the main character.
